How does the Swedish tax system work?
Swedish wage tax is mainly based on municipal tax (kommunalskatt, averaging about 32%), levied on beskattningsbar inkomst (gross minus grundavdrag). Above the skiktgrans threshold a 20% state tax applies. The jobbskatteavdrag is then subtracted, lowering the effective burden β for typical earnings it is usually 22-30%.
Frequently asked questions
- What makes up Swedish wage tax?
- The main component is kommunalskatt (municipal tax), which in 2024 averages around 32% (it varies between municipalities, 29-35%). Above the skiktgrans threshold (approx. SEK 598,500 per year) statlig inkomstskatt is added β a 20% state tax on the excess. The jobbskatteavdrag is then subtracted from the tax.
- What is the jobbskatteavdrag?
- The jobbskatteavdrag is an earned-income tax credit subtracted from the kommunalskatt. It rises progressively with income up to a plateau and is phased out at very high incomes. This is why the effective net pay in Sweden is noticeably higher than the 32% municipal rate alone would suggest.
- What is the grundavdrag?
- The grundavdrag is a basic deduction that reduces taxable income (beskattningsbar inkomst). In reality it depends on income (approx. SEK 16,000-45,000 per year). The calculator uses a simplified flat amount, so the result is approximate.
- Does the calculator include everything?
- No. The calculator uses an averaged municipal rate, a simplified grundavdrag and jobbskatteavdrag, plus state tax. It does not include the church fee (kyrkoavgift), burial fee (begravningsavgift) or individual deductions. The employer payslip or the Skatteverket assessment is binding.
