Net salary calculator — calculate take-home pay in Norway

Our free calculator lets you quickly work out your net salary in Norway (lons etter skatt) based on 2024 tax rates. Simply enter your gross amount — monthly or annual — and the tool automatically calculates trygdeavgift, the flat 22% tax on alminnelig inntekt, and the progressive trinnskatt. Results are shown in NOK, both monthly and annually.

The calculator is designed for salaried employees (lonnsmottakere) under the standard tax scheme. It does not include individual deductions (BSU, reisefradrag, foreldrefradrag) — if you claim such allowances, your actual net pay may be higher. Always verify the result with your employer or on the Skatteetaten website.

How does the Norwegian tax system work?

Norwegian wage tax consists of three components: trygdeavgift (7.8% of gross), a flat 22% tax on alminnelig inntekt (gross minus minstefradrag and personfradrag), and trinnskatt — a progressive step tax that rises with income and is calculated directly on gross pay. Combined, the effective tax rate in Norway is typically 25-40% for average earnings.

Frequently asked questions

What is trygdeavgift and how much is it?
Trygdeavgift is the mandatory national insurance contribution (folktrygden) deducted from employee wages in Norway. In 2024, the rate for employment income (lonnsinntekt) is 7.8% of gross pay. The funds go to the national insurance system, covering pensions, sick pay, and unemployment benefits.
How does trinnskatt (step tax) work?
Trinnskatt is an additional progressive tax on gross income, levied on top of the flat 22% tax. It works like a marginal tax — each income bracket is taxed at its own rate, not the full amount. Example: on 300,000 NOK annual income, the bracket 208,051-292,850 NOK is taxed at 1.7%, and the bracket 292,851-300,000 NOK at 4%. 2024 brackets: 0% up to 208,050; 1.7% up to 292,850; 4% up to 670,000; 13.6% up to 937,900; 16.6% up to 1,573,500; 17.6% above.
What are minstefradrag and personfradrag?
Minstefradrag is the standard deduction for work-related expenses: 46% of gross pay, capped at 104,450 NOK (2024). Personfradrag is the personal allowance — 88,250 NOK in 2024. Both reduce the 22% tax base (alminnelig inntekt), but do NOT affect trygdeavgift or trinnskatt.
Does the calculator include all tax deductions?
No. The calculator applies only the standard deductions: minstefradrag and personfradrag. It does not include individual deductions such as BSU (housing savings for young people), foreldrefradrag (childcare), reisefradrag (commuting), rentekostnader (mortgage interest), or others. The result is approximate — exact figures are provided by Skatteetaten.
How are monthly wages converted to annual figures?
The calculator multiplies the monthly figure by 12, performs all calculations annually, then divides by 12 to show monthly net pay. This matches the Norwegian annual tax settlement (skatteoppgjor) approach.
