Finnish Net Salary Calculator (Nettopalkka)
Calculate your Finnish net salary (nettopalkka) from gross. Includes income tax (vero) and employee social contributions.
Nettopalkka calculator — estimate your Finnish net salary (2024)
This free calculator estimates your net salary in Finland for 2024. Enter your gross salary (monthly or annual), age (affects the TyEL pension rate), municipal tax rate (kunnallisvero), and optionally church tax (kirkollisvero). The calculator deducts progressive state income tax (valtionvero), municipal tax, and all mandatory employee social contributions.
The result is an approximate estimate. The calculator uses simplified assumptions: approximate 2024 valtionvero brackets (Verohallinto), the EUR 750 tulonhankkimisvahennys lump sum, and paivarahamaksu only above the earnings threshold. Individual deductions (perusvahennys, tyotulovahennys, commuting costs, mortgage interest) are not modelled. The binding calculation is from Verohallinto or your employer.

How is the Finnish net salary calculated?
The following are deducted from gross salary: (1) TyEL elakemaksu — pension contribution 7.15% or 8.65% (age 53-62); (2) tyottomyysvakuutusmaksu — 0.79% unemployment contribution; (3) sairausvakuutus paivarahamaksu — 1.01% of gross (only above EUR 16,862/year); (4) tulonhankkimisvahennys EUR 750 lump sum. The resulting taxable income is the base for: (5) valtionvero — progressive state tax using 2024 brackets; (6) kunnallisvero — municipal tax at the selected rate; (7) sairaanhoitomaksu — approx. 0.51% of taxable income; (8) kirkollisvero — optionally.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the Finnish tax system work?
- Finland uses a progressive state income tax (valtionvero) applied to taxable income. On top of that, a flat municipal tax (kunnallisvero) is levied at a rate set by each municipality (average ~7.5% after the 2023 reform). Employee social contributions (TyEL pension, unemployment, sickness insurance) and an optional church tax (kirkollisvero) are also deducted. Net salary equals gross minus all of these deductions.
- What is TyEL and who pays it?
- TyEL (Employees Pension Act) is a mandatory employee pension contribution. In 2024 the rate is 7.15% for employees aged 17-52 and 63-67. For the 53-62 age group the rate rises to 8.65% because pension accrues at a faster rate. It is deducted directly from gross salary.
- Why is the default kunnallisvero 7.5% and not higher?
- After the 2023 municipal reform, health and social service funding was transferred from municipalities to regional welfare counties (hyvinvointialueet). Municipalities lowered their tax rates accordingly; the national average is around 7.5%. If you know your exact municipal rate, enter it manually.
- Does the calculator account for all deductions?
- No. The calculator applies only the tulonhankkimisvahennys lump-sum deduction (EUR 750/year). It does not model perusvahennys (basic deduction), tyotulovahennys (earned-income deduction), or personal deductions (mortgage interest, commuting costs, etc.). Results may therefore slightly overstate the tax burden, especially at lower income levels.
- What is the sairausvakuutus paivarahamaksu?
- This is the daily-allowance component of the sickness insurance contribution, which funds sick-pay benefits (paivaraha). In 2024 it is 1.01% of gross salary. It applies only above an annual gross threshold of approximately EUR 16,862; below that threshold the contribution is zero.
- Is this result considered tax advice?
- No. The result is for orientation only. The binding calculation is prepared by Verohallinto (the Finnish Tax Administration) or your employer. If in doubt, contact Verohallinto or a qualified tax adviser.
