Power converter: KM to kW — horsepower and kilowatts

Our free power converter converts metric horsepower (KM / PS), kilowatts (kW) and imperial horsepower (hp) to all other units simultaneously. Just enter a value and select the input unit — results appear live without clicking. All calculations run directly in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

KM, kW, hp — when to use which unit?

European car specifications predominantly use KM (metric horsepower, also known as PS from the German Pferdestärke). EU regulations, however, require engine power to be stated in kW as the SI unit. In the US market, hp (horsepower, imperial) is used instead, which is slightly larger than KM. This converter handles all three, so you can compare offers from different markets without paper calculations.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilowatts is 100 horsepower (KM/PS)?
100 KM (metric horsepower / PS) equals exactly 73.55 kW. The converter uses the official coefficient: 1 KM = 0.73549875 kW.
What is the difference between KM and hp?
KM (metric horsepower, also called PS from German Pferdestärke) and hp (imperial horsepower) are two different units. 1 KM = 0.73549875 kW, while 1 hp = 0.745699872 kW — a difference of about 1.4%. European car specs use KM/PS; American specs use hp.
How do I convert kW to KM?
Multiply the number of kilowatts by 1.3596216. Example: a 110 kW engine is 110 × 1.3596 ≈ 149.6 KM. You can also use the converter above — enter the value, select kW as the input unit and the KM result appears automatically.
Why do manufacturers list power in both kW and KM?
EU regulations require power to be stated in kW as the SI unit, but KM remains widely understood in European countries. Manufacturers therefore usually list both — e.g. `85 kW (115 KM)`. In the US, hp is used instead.
