Online currency converter — live ECB reference rates
Our free currency converter uses the latest European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates. Enter an amount, choose the source and target currency — the result appears instantly. We support over 30 currencies covered by the ECB reference rates, including EUR, USD, GBP, CHF and JPY. The default base currency depends on your region — for a US visitor it is the dollar, the currency issued by the Fed — and rates update every business day. No login or registration required.
How does conversion via the euro work?
The ECB sets daily reference rates against the euro. The converter performs the conversion in two steps: it first converts the source amount to euros, then converts euros to the target currency. This means you can convert any currency pair — e.g. USD to GBP — even when the ECB does not publish a direct rate for that pair.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do the exchange rates come from?
- Rates come from the European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates, served through the public frankfurter.app API. These are the daily ECB reference rates — the same ones the ECB publishes every business day. There is no charge for this service.
- How often are the rates updated?
- The ECB sets reference rates once a day on business days (usually around 16:00 CET). The rate shown in the converter is from the latest available publication — the date is always clearly displayed.
- Can I convert currencies other than euro and dollar?
- Yes. The converter supports every currency covered by the ECB reference rates — over 30 currencies including EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, JPY, NOK, CZK, HUF and many more. The list is sorted alphabetically by currency code.
- Does the converter work offline?
- No — ECB reference rates require an internet connection. When the page loads, the converter fetches the latest rates from the server. If the connection fails, you will see an error message with a retry button. Note the default base currency depends on your region (for a US visitor it defaults to the dollar, the currency the Fed issues).
